A few years ago, the boys read a Boxcar Children book in which the kids make a museum out of curious things they've found. The boys could not stand this. They could not stand this until they had a museum of their own. Our garage shelves began filling with weird rocks, bird nests, egg shells, bugs, etc.
Finally this summer, I got the museum together. Grandmas made goodies, we borrowed tables from the meeting room, and invited lots of friends.
Apparently, owls vomit up what they can't digest of their little meals, and you can find these lovely "owl pellets" in the woods if you know what to look for. Then you can dissect them (see below) and find little rodent bones and bird beaks and fur and feathers.
Our museum covered history from ancient Egypt to Christ.
Piranha and alligator heads, donated by friends who've spent a bit of time on the Amazon...
Poetry corner: I was involved in this museum, after all. Unfortunately, this photo doesn't show the dessicated frog roadkill in the jar to the rear. To accompany it we had the poem, "Be Kind and Gentle to the Frog..." by Belloc.
We tucked this Mystery Rock into our rock display and asked people to identify it. This was a trick question, since this chunk has more historical significance than geological. That's a hint! Can you guess?
